Professional Behavior Etiquette Overview

While your skills and talents may be the key to finding a job, your professional behavior is most certainly the key to keeping it.  Here is a list of do's and don'ts regarding conduct in a professional setting:

• DO keep a clean and professional appearance.  Refrain from allowing your hair to get too scruffy, and make absolutely sure you aren't stinking up the place.  No matter the level of your attire, make sure it is free of rips and tears.  Carry yourself with a level of confidence and pride.

• DO carry a cheerful attitude.  It pays to smile.  Be friendly and respectful to all others.

• DO pay attention to the conversations you're a part of.  Don't ignore the stories people tell, no matter how insignificant they may be, as this can appear rude and come back to bite you in the end.

• DO NOT engage in messy behavior.  Try not to eat in a professional setting.  If you must eat, do so very slowly and eat only what you must.  Try not to scratch, fidget, blow your nose, or do other things that can be disruptive or unappealing in such a scenario.

• DO NOT carry your personal life into the workplace.  This goes for any social networking that your boss may read.  Keep your personal and professional lives as separate as humanly possible.  The less people at work know about your personal life, the better.

• DO NOT be negative.  Having a negative attitude about things will almost always lead to you tainting your image with others.  Stay positive, and stay employed.
